‘Give taluk status to Mecheri’

Demanding that Mecheri town panchayat be made as a separate taluk, more than 300 villagers observed a fast in Mecheri here on Tuesday.

Led by S.R. Parthiban, MLA, villagers said that according to a Government Order in 2003, a new taluk can be created if it has 30 revenue villages, a population of one lakh, and covers 250 sq km.

Mecheri has a population of 1.17 lakh, 31 revenue villages, and is spread over 227 sq.km.

They said that Mecheri has reputed education institutions, industrial units, government offices, hospitals, and other basic infrastructure in place.

But they alleged that efforts were on to annex one village with Omalur taluk and two villages with Kadayampatti town panchayat.

“This will make Mecheri not eligible to be upgraded as a taluk,” they said. Most of the traders in Mecheri downed shutters on Tuesday in support of the protest. They will meet District Collector K. Maharabushanam on Wednesday, and present their grievance.

Many villagers alleged that politicians with vested interests were behind the move to annex villages with other taluks, and town panchayats.
