Girls injured in mock drill

SALEM, MARCH 11 . A mock drill to check explosives ended in a freak accident injuring three girls of a private college here, when a dummy grenade went off accidentally today.

According to the police, Periyar University, Salem, in association with the Indian Red Cross was conducting a three-day camp for youth Red Cross members at a private college here.

On the final day of the camp the Quick Reaction Team of the Salem City Police was engaged in a mock drill at a make shift tent. As part of the drill, a dummy grenade was hurled out of the tent, which went off accidentally.

Following this, metal and plastic particles flew out from the grenade injuring the girls who were witnessing the drill along with other students.

Deepalakshmi, a first year Chemistry student sustained injuries on her chest, while Arokia Lima Rose and Lisa Banu sustained injuries on their hands and forehead. The three were immediately taken to a private hospital in Salem. The Salem City Commissioner of Police, Abash Kumar, visited the scene of the mishap.
