DINDIGUL : Even as the district unit of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu has been making massive efforts to provide more facilities at the district stadium to train rural students, delay in sanctioning funds by the Central Government has not only disrupted the ongoing project but also future projects.

At present, district stadium has natural turf football ground with sprinkler facilities to maintain grass, basketball court, volleyball court, a modern gym and an eight-lane athletic track and all necessary equipment and facilities for gymnastics and athletes, thanks to the funds sanctioned by the State and Central Governments and liberal donations from the people.

On the basis of proposals sent by the Dindigul unit of the SDAT for construction of a swimming pool in the sports complex, the State Government has sanctioned its share of Rs.15 lakhs for this project.

With the funds, 50 per cent of construction work was over. Construction of sidewalls and formation of tank for the main pool were over.

Plastering work, fixing tiles and other works are pending owing to delay in sanctioning funds from the Central Government.

Sources in the district administration said that the district sport office has been waiting for funds to the tune of Rs.13.25 lakhs from the Central Government to complete the project.

Even though district sports office sent proposals for 11 feet deep tank for the pool, the SDAT advised it to restrict depth of the tank to four to five feet, in order to ensure cent per cent safety of users, mostly children.

With modification in size of the tank, the construction cost too has been reduced considerably, they said.

``Without completing the swimming pool project, we cannot submit fresh proposals for other projects. Delay in sanctioning funds would delay further future projects, that would ultimately escalate construction costs'', they pointed out.

Gallery, multi purpose indoor stadium, hockey stadium and shuttle court are other ambitious projects in the pipeline.
