Free health camp throws up interesting diabetes statistics

CHENNAI: A free health camp was conducted by MedIndia Hospitals, Nungambakkam, on Doctor's Day. The theme was "Ten Commandments for a Healthy Life".

An analysis of the medical records of the camp attendees revealed the following statistics: The camp was attended by 75 people.

The incidence of known diabetes was 39 per cent. In addition, eight per cent of camp attendees were newly diagnosed as suffering from diabetes.

The incidence of hypertension (blood pressure) as per WHO classification was three per cent and 21 per cent of camp attendees were newly diagnosed as suffering from diabetes.

As per WHO classification on Body Mass Index (BMI), 43 per cent of the camp attendees were classified as obese, 55 per cent as normal and two per cent as underweight.

The ratio of males to females was 73 per cent to 27 per cent.

Sixteen per cent of the attendees were below 40 years of age, 56 per cent in the age group of 40-65 and 28 per cent above the age of 65 years.
