Foundation stone laid for houses to tsunami-hit

Tuticorin: Anitha R Radhakrishnan, Minister for Housing and Urban Development, laid the foundation for 72 houses that were to be constructed at Keezha Tiruchendur for the tsunami-affected families residing in and around Alanthalai village, at a function held at Tiruchendur near here on Saturday.

Official sources said the construction of the houses, being carried out on a total project outlay of Rs 1.33 crores, would be completed before March 31, 2006. The entire project expenditure would be borne by a United Kingdom-based non-governmental organisation, sources added.

The cost of each house, which occupies an area of 324 sq ft, would be Rs 1.85 lakhs.

Mr. Radhakrishnan also gave away free house pattas to 66 persons hailing from Tiruchendur and cycles to 34 girls studying at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Tiruchendur, under a State Government scheme.
