Forgotten promise

Sir, — Colin Powell is all praise for Pervez Musharaff's speech and has been advising India to scale down its troops on the basis of the General's promises. One would like to know what would have been the attitude of the U.S. if Mullah Omar or Osama bin Laden had delivered similar `good' speeches against terrorism after the attacks on the World Trade Center.

India's demand that the criminals in the list given to Pakistan be handed over as evidence of a change of heart is absolutely correct. The U.S. has the obligation to force Pakistan to do that. It is surprising that the promise given by Bill Clinton that the U.S. would help hunt down the hijackers of the IA plane has been forgotten by both the U.S. and India. Now is the time to act upon it.
