`Foot electricity bills of panchayats'

MUSIRI, OCT. 7 . The Federation of Village Panchayat Presidents of Thottiyam Union urged the State Government to foot the electricity bill of all panchayats in the wake of serious financial crisis faced by these local bodies.

A resolution, adopted at its meeting held at Thottiyam near here today, said though the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board had not disconnected the power connection for services like water supply and street lights, it resorted to disruption of the supply to the offices and other panchayat bodies. It also sought an immediate restoration of power supply to the places where disconnections had been effected. The Government should directly pay the power bill of the panchayats to the TNEB.

The meeting urged the Government to enhance the funds from the State Finance Commission from 8 per cent to 24 per cent.
