Focus on solid waste management

TIRUCHI, NOV 29 . Speakers sought the cooperation of the public to implement the solid waste management scheme and maintain a clean environment at an awareness programme organised by the Tiruchi Corporation at Srirangam yesterday.

They asked the public to assist the government and non-governmental organisations in their efforts to keep the city clean and green.

With rising population, the amount of garbage generated has increased manifold. So, the district administration, local bodies, pollution control board, NGOs and the public should act together for not only safe disposal of waste but also in keeping a healthy environment.

Highlighting the steps taken by the Corporation authorities in garbage removal, the City Engineer, V. Sivaraman, said the amount of waste generated had sharply increased over the years. Around 350 tonnes of waste was being generated every day. Finding a proper place for dumping garbage was a bigger problem.

Dumping degradable and non-degradable waste in the same spot would not only endanger the environment but also pollute the underground water, he said.

As per guidelines, every local body should collect garbage and dispose them scientifically.

Mr. Sivaraman said that degradable and non-degradable waste could be segregated at the source. This small step would be of great help in handling and safe disposal of garbage in the compost yards.

The Corporation has plans to generate power from waste and it had submitted a proposal to the Government in this regard. If the plan took off, it would eliminate the setting up of compost yard for handling wastes, he said.

The Deputy Mayor, M. Anbalagan, said that such awareness programmes would be held in all zones.

The Assistant Commissioner, Ariyamangalam zone, S. Balasubramanian, asked the people to desist from throwing garbage in drains, which would affect the environment.

The zonal chairman, R. Manohar, said the solid waste management scheme would be implemented in several districts across the State with the aim of having a proper system of garbage handling and disposal.

Making a detailed presentation, the Exnora International member from Vellore, Srinivasan, said information about segregation at source level, safe disposal of garbage and the ill effects of garbage accumulation should be constantly disseminated to the public to create an awareness among them.
