Flower show inaugurated

PONDICHERRY, FEB. 15. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, has said that the Union Territory of Pondicherry was registering self- sufficiency in food production.

Inaugurating a three-day 23rd annual flower, fruit and vegetable show conducted by the Department of Agriculture in the century-old Botanical garden here today, he said that one lakh tons of foodgrains was being produced on an extent of 25,000 hectares here.

He also referred to the production of horticultural crops on an extent of 700 hectares and the administration was envisaging an outlay of Rs. 14 crores for agriculture in the Tenth Plan.

He said there was need to protect subsoil water as there was threat of sea water intruding into the underground water table.

The uzhavar sandhais had come to prove their impact and producers of horticultural crop were benefitted largely by the sandhais. One more such outlet would be opened in Pondicherry, he said.

Paddy procurement centre without room for middlemen would be opened in Tirukanoor in Mannadipet Assembly segment here, he added.
