Five held in robbery case

NAGAPATTINAM: In a major breakthrough the special police team formed to investigate the robbery of Rs.12 lakh cash from the employee of a jewellery shop at Sirkazhi in April this year and other cases in Sirkazhi area has nabbed five out of six accused involved in the crimes.

Police sources told The Hindu that the special team, formed under the instructions of the SP, K.A.Abdul Rahuf, led by Sirkazhi DSP Subbaiah comprising Inspectors K.R.Radhakrishnan, Venkatesan and Sachithanandam investigated the case and had arrested three persons - Sathiamurthy, Sekar and Jeeva last week and recovered Rs.6 lakhs from them.

Later, the team got information that two more persons, Mohamed Rafiq and Sridhar, of Thirumullaivasal, near Sirkazhi, who were involved in the robbery were staying in Chennai. Inspectors Radhakrishnan and Sachithanandam rushed to Chennai on Sunday and arrested Mohamed Rafiq and Sridhar from the former's residence in Puliyanthope and recovered Rs.84,500 in cash from Rafiq and Rs.2.52 lakhs from Sridhar's residence at Thirumullaivasal.

Mohamed Rafiq and Sridhar were remanded to judicial custody after being produced before the Judicial Magistrate here.
