Feasibility study soon for multi-layer flyover at Kathipara

CHENNAI, JUNE 1. A multi-layer flyover at the Kathipara junction, one of the busiest traffic intersections in the city, and a flyover on GST Road near the airport will be constructed.

The process of conducting feasibility study for the two projects has been set in motion, according to the Union Minister of Shipping and Surface Transport, T.R. Baalu, who is also the South Chennai Member of Parliament.

Addressing a press meet here today, he said several agencies, including a few government bodies, were being considered for the feasibility study.

Traffic experts have favoured construction of a multi-layer flyover at Kathipara to ease congestion.

According to an estimate, more than one lakh vehicles pass through the junction daily.

A survey in 1998 revealed that 1.08 lakh vehicles used the roundabout daily.

The Kathipara junction is a gateway to the city and is located at the junction of two of the city's most congested roads — GST Road and Inner Ring Road.

The stretch of GST Road near the airport is accident-prone.
