Staff Reporter

ERODE: With many farmers complaining of pest attack in sugarcane here, officials of the Agricultural Department have provided them a few tips on controlling it.

Shortage of labourers

Many farmers who traditionally raised turmeric, paddy and other cash crops switched to sugarcane due to shortage of agricultural labourers. The yield has been reasonable, but of late they have been complaining of pest attack.

According to the officials, Whooly aphid, the pest, first detected in Maharashtra had entered Sathyamangalam and other areas in the district through Karnataka.

If the pests are not controlled, the entire crop will be destroyed in a short span, resulting in heavy loss. Once the farmers notice the attack, they should burn the leaves, as the pest spreads fast in air.

Affected leaves

Further, the affected leaves should neither be placed in cattle pound nor fed to the cattle, the officials said. For details, farmers can contact agricultural officers of the respective areas.
