Farmers for permitting water users' association to desilt water bodies

The representatives of various farmers' associations here have urged the district administration to give permission to water users' association to desilt the water bodies instead of giving the contract to a company.

The meeting witnessed heated arguments among the representatives of farmers' associations and the officials over according permission to a private company to desilt the water bodies.

The officials also confirmed that the representatives from the company met them in connection with the desilting of water bodies in the district.

Even though the district administration has given permission to the water users' association to desilt the water bodies and sell the silt after obtaining permission from the Department of Mines and Minerals, the officials are yet to pass any order officially in this connection.

Instead, a move from a private company to remove silt from the water bodies irked the representatives of various farmers' associations who demanded the district administration to give permission to them to remove the silt.

The chairman of Kodayar irrigation project (Water Resource Organisation), A. Vins Anto said that the district administration should take steps to set up direct purchase centres for the benefit of farmers to sell their produce for a better price.

Moreover, the Government should allot the maintenance grant to the Public Works Department in time to enable them undertake the renovation works in the water bodies and the irrigation channels before the onset of monsoon ie before the month of June.

The Collector (in-charge), S. Palanisamy, said that the department of agriculture has adequate stock of certified seeds and fertilizers to be distributed to the farmers in the first season.

The Government had been implementing various welfare schemes for the benefit of farmers and hence he appealed to the farmers to avail the benefits.

The farmer's festival was also being organised in different parts of the district to inform the farmers about various schemes announced by the Government.

The Joint Director for Agriculture, Dhanasingh David, PA to Collector (agri) Bosline Vincent Sam, Executive Engineer (irrigation) Subramanian, and other officials and also representatives of various farmers' associations participated in the meeting.
