Expo on handloom items

NAGERCOIL, JULY 24. The Government has been implementing various development and welfare schemes for weavers in the district, the Collector, Rajesh Lakhoni, has said.

Inaugurating a special exhibition at the Kalaivanar Auditorium here on Friday, the Collector said a target of Rs.75 lakhs had been fixed for the sales of handloom products during the special exhibition of handlooms.

The handloom textiles worth Rs3.50 crores, produced by the handloom weavers' co-operative societies, remained stockpiled and hence, the exhibition was organised to dispose of them. Last year, Rs.40 lakhs handloom items were sold during the exhibition.

The present exhibition would be open till August 6 for the benefit of weavers who can dispose of their produces for better price. The Government announced a 20 per cent rebate for all handloom items. There were 82 weavers' co-operative societies in the district.

The Government launched a saving-cum-relief scheme for weavers. The beneficiaries would get Rs.65,000 in case of natural or accidental death. Under the weavers' family pension scheme, Rs.350 per month was being distributed to 17 families and Rs.200 per month to 671 weavers under the old age pension scheme. The Government allotted Rs.2.45 lakhs to 19 persons under the housing finance scheme along with handlooms last year, the Collector added.
