KURNOOLNELLORE: The election machinery is getting ready to conduct the election of mayor and municipal chairpersons and deputy chiefs in the district on Friday.

Collector Vikas Raj conducted a meeting with Municipal Commissioners and RDOs on Thursday to review the guidelines and make arrangements accordingly.

Members and ex-officio members (MP and MLA) will elect the civic chief and the deputy chief by show of hands. Quorum for the meeting is one half of the total members of the council and it has to be completed within an hour from the appointed time of the meeting.

Whip

The Collector said only the presiding officer and the election observer were allowed to occupy the dais. They would administer oath to members and start the election process. Registered parties had been allowed to issue whip to its members. In case of disobedience of whip, the member is liable for disqualification. However, the vote cast by him or her is valid.

The parties communicated to the district election authority identifying the person eligible for issuing the whip. Mr. Vikas Raj asked the presiding officers not to deviate from the procedure, which would invite technical problems and strictly adhere to guidelines laid down by the State Election Commission.

The Congress which secured absolute majority in all the five municipalities is found to be struggling to pick up the deputy chiefs and chairpersons in municipalities where it did not name them before the elections.

The party almost finalised the candidature of S. Raghurami Reddy for the Mayor post in Kurnool while the candidate for Deputy Mayor post is yet to be picked up as various social groups were pressing for nomination of their community. The supporters of Mr. Salim Basha staged a dharna at the DCC office demanding the Deputy Mayor Post for minorities. In Adoni, the party almost decided on Vitta Kistappa and in Yemmiganur, Butta Rangaiah for the chairman posts as both were projected as candidates before the polling. However, the deputy chiefs at both places were under consideration. In Nandyal, the names of Kaipa Ramudu and Sriramulu were being examined for the post. In Dhone, the party leadership could not arrive at a consensus candidate among the five. The post is reserved for BC women here.
