NAMAKKAL: The district administration will install as many as 432 solar-powered lamps in houses and 20 in streets in eight villages in the district, Collector G. Sundarmurthi said.

Participating at a meeting on renewable energy sources held here on Tuesday, he said that following villages have been selected for installing the lamps: Azhiya Nilai, Velikkadu, Salakkadu, Vazhkuzhipatti, Edalmalaikkadu, all in Kolli Hills Panchayat Union and Kedamalai, Keelur and Melur in Vennathur panchayat union.

Of which, Rs. 6 lakh was Government subsidy, he said.

He said that biogas plants functioning at Koonavelampatti Pudhur, Akkiyampatti and Chinna Muthalipatti villages were being used to supply electricity to the lamps and motor pumps in the sanitary complexes in the villages.

Biogas plants

He appealed to the people in the villages to establish biogas plants for cooking instead of using the Liquefied Petroleum Gas. He also asked the people to go for non-conventional energy sources.
