Dyeing workers demand increase in wages

ERODE: Hundreds of dyeing workers, mainly women working in Chennimalai, urged the Collector to instruct yarn dyeing factory owners to increase their wages.

They presented a petition to Collector D. Karthikeyan on Monday at the grievances day meeting.

Workers said that for dyeing yarn, the factory owners paid Rs. 3 per bundle.

For dyeing and bundling, workers were deployed in groups of four. Four persons will dye and bundle a maximum of 80 bundles per day and got Rs. 240 as wages.

If it was divided into four, each worker got Rs. 60 per day. But they had to work 12 hours. They demanded that their wage be increased to a minimum Rs. 7. The Collector assured that he would do the needful.

He received a record 776 petitions on Monday, most of which related to old age pension and house site patta.
