Diversion of rice: four arrested

CUDDALORE: The police on Sunday night seized 327 bags of rice (50 kg each), meant for the food-for-work programme, being illegally transported in a lorry. Four persons were arrested and the vehicle was impounded.

Delta Force personnel led by the Sub-Inspector, Sekkizhar, who were conducting routine checks on the Paravanar bridge near Vadalur, intercepted the lorry carrying the rice bags.

On interrogation, an occupant of the lorry, Ganesan (28) of Chidambaram, confessed that rice allotted under the food-for-work scheme was being collected through agents from various points and taken to Bangalore to be sold at market price.

The arrested were Ganesan, two drivers Tamil Selvan (32) of Bhuvanagiri and Senthilkumar (35) of Mel Bhuvanagiri, and cleaner Nagooran (28).
