Direct sowing proves a boon to Karaikal farmers

Pondicherry Nov. 13. The scheme of direct sowing evolved and encouraged by the Union Territory Administration recently in Karaikal has enabled farmers to cover 2000 hectares under the ponni variety of paddy. The recent rain had come as a relief to them.

The coverage used to be around 6000 hectares, but non-availability of Cauvery water and absence of rain in the recent past kept farmers on tenterhooks. The expeditious steps taken by the Administration to encourage direct sowing in anticipation of rain from the north east monsoon had, however, proved useful.

Karaikal was declared drought-hit and the Union Territory Administration sought Rs. 40 crores to manage the situation. A detailed memorandum was presented by political leaders led by the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, to the Prime Minister last month.
