Development works reviewed

Tuticorin: The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, on Wednesday reviewed the progress of various ongoing development works being executed at a cost of Rs. 63 lakhs in areas falling under Azhwarthirunageri and Udangudi blocks.

He checked the construction of drainage at Irudayapuram, being carried out at a cost of Rs. 1.65 lakhs, anganwadi building (Rs. 1.7 lakhs) at Azhwarthirunageri, and improvement of public ground (Rs. 9.5 lakhs) at Punnakayal. He inspected the construction of a ground level water tank coming up at Authoor at a cost of Rs. 35 lakhs and an approach road at Kallamozhi at a cost of Rs. eight lakhs. He asked the departments concerned to expedite the works and commission them within the time frame allocated for the respective projects.

Facelift to tourism

Later, he told mediapersons that projects worth Rs. 250 lakhs were under way to boost tourism potential in the district.

A sum of Rs. 48.15 lakhs was earmarked to improve basic amenities in and around temples that constituted Nava Tirupathi.

"Of the total amount, 50 per cent would be taken care of by the Department of Tourism and the rest to be provided from Small Savings Fund," he said.

Similarly, infrastructure near Kazhugamalai hillock, a prime tourism location, would be strengthened at a cost of Rs. 48.68 lakhs, allocated by the Centre. The seashore at Kayalpattinam would be given a facelift at a cost of Rs. 30 lakhs and Rs. 11 lakhs would be spent to improve basic infrastructure around the Veerapandia Kattabomman memorial at Panchalankurichi near here.

Besides, the district administration was awaiting administrative sanction from the State Government to establish a boat club at Authoor at a cost of Rs. 16 lakhs, he added.
