'Defer collection of loan dues from farmers'

PONDICHERRY, AUG.14. A delegation of the Karaikal-based Sara Educational and Charitable Trust and Tamil Nadu Agriculturists Association has presented a petition to the Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram requesting him to intervene and arrange for postponement of recovery of the loans farmers of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry obtained from banks.

The chairperson of the Trust, Jeso Banu, said in a release here on Friday that she and the Secretary of the Tamil Nadu State Farmers Association, V.M. Duraisamy had along with a delegation of farmers met Chidambaram at Delhi recently and presented a petition to Mr.Chidambaram.

The chairperson said that farmers had suffered a lot because of monsoon failure for last three years and had been facing a grim situation in raising any crop.

The farmers were driven to the situation of purchasing water on payment of price, she said.

The trust functionary said that in spite of the grave situation the bank authorities were pressuring the farmers to repay the crop loan and also medium term loans they had borrowed from the banks.

The petition pleaded for postponing the recovery for at least two years and also urged the Union Minister to issue directives to the banks to make fresh crop loans available to the farmers.
