`Declare Tamil official language of Bench'

MADURAI, OCT. 11. A group of advocates today observed a fast in front of the High Court Bench here today, demanding that Tamil be declared the official language of the court.

Thyagi Pathigachalam, president, Indiya Yezhai Makkal Munnani Kazhagam, launched the agitation, which was supported by a section of lawyers and various political parties.

The advocates withdrew the agitation in the afternoon, after holding talks with the Registrar of the Bench.

Mr. Pathigachalam alone was secured by the Othakadai police.

The police said he would not be arrested, and he would be persuaded to give up the fast.

Earlier, the police arranged for a meeting between the agitators and the Registrar (Administration). After the meeting, the advocates said the Registrar had promised that he would send their representations to the Registrar General in the Principal Bench, and get back to them as soon as he received a reply.
