Decks cleared for track doubling

MADURAI SEPT. 26. The Railway Board is said to have cleared the decks for the doubling of the Madurai-Dindigul broad gauge line.

While preliminary survey was completed last week, the new line would be laid on the existing alignment replacing the meter gauge track. ``Since there is no need for land acquisition, we can straightaway proceed with the Rs. 94-crore project by suspending operations on the MG line. The work will commence soon after financial sanction is given,'' a top railway official said today.

The Madurai-Dindigul stretch is the most congested section between Madurai and Chennai. ``While 80 per cent operation of trains is considered saturated, the usage of the section has crossed 150 per cent,'' the official said. The doubling would pave the way for introducing more trains, besides improving punctuality.

During the recent survey, officials found the MG alignment suitable on the engineering and signal/telecommunication fronts for laying the new line. The project was sanctioned in the supplementary grants, railway sources said.
