Death sentence

Sir, — Your Editorial on the death sentence (Dec. 20) presents a balanced view on capital punishment. Though modern society abhors the death sentence, the general public feels that capital punishment is needed in the case of hardcore anti-social elements. The pages of Indian history show that certain eras were called the `Golden Age' because people enjoyed a secure and peaceful life, as punishment was very severe even for small crimes. Even during the British rule, laws were quite severe. But in the post-Independent India, in the name of human rights protection, criminals indulging in inhuman destruction of lives and property are shown much leniency. The laws of the land and the judges interpreting laws should not be sympathetic to those who conspire to betray the country.
