Cyclist killed in accident near Chromepet

CHENNAI NOV. 13. A cyclist was killed on the spot when a water tanker hit him on GST Road near Chromepet yesterday.

Murugan (26) was riding his cycle near the MIT bridge and was on his way to Tambaram when the tanker hit him from behind, police said. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled.

In an accident near the same spot on October 24, a youth was killed instantly by a water tanker. Manikandan (20) was pushing his cycle across the road when he was hit. On February 13 this year, a 37-year-old police constable was killed after being hit by a lorry near the MIT bridge.

Speeding and rash driving by heavy vehicles, particularly sand lorries and water tankers on GST Road, contributed to accidents, a residents' welfare association office-bearer at Chromepet said. The stretch of the National Highway 45 near Chromepet where the construction of the MIT bridge is dragging on for months is the scene of many accidents. The road suddenly becomes narrow and vehicles exercise little caution while approaching the bridge.

Elsewhere at Ambattur, a 36-year-old woman died when she was knocked from a two-wheeler by a lorry. Ambattur police said Irudhaya Mary was travelling with her husband Selvam, when the lorry hit the two-wheeler on MTH Road on Tuesday morning. The injured woman was rushed to a private hospital, where she was given first aid. She was later referred to the KMC Hospital, where she died.
