Tamilnadu Scientist Award for 2004 presented to seven scientists

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: : The Tamilnadu Scientist Award for 2004 was presented to seven scientists on behalf of the Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology at a function here on Thursday.

The award is given every year to scientists and technologists for outstanding research work/skill in basic science disciplines. It carries a cash award of Rs 10,000 and a citation.

Handing over the award, Higher Education Department Secretary K.S. Sripathi deprecated the craze among students for professional courses, especially for engineering and medical courses.

"No job prospects"

With nearly 26,000 engineering graduates and 2,600 doctors coming out of college every year in the State, job opportunities would become stagnated. There was bright future for arts and pure science graduates.

Madras University Vice-Chancellor S.P. Thyagarajan, who presided over the function, said none of the Indian universities had ranked among the first 100 international universities.

The awardees are A. Ragupathy, Professor of Entomology, Tamilnadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore; P. Ramamurthy, Department of Inorganic Chemistry, University of Madras, Guindy campus; S. Suresh, Director, Medican Systems, Chennai; H. Devaraj, Professor of Bio-Chemistry, University of Madras, Guindy campus; A.G. Murugesan, Senior Lecturer, SPK Centre for Environmental Sciences, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Alwarkuruchi; R. Dhanasekaran, Director, Crystal Growth Centre, Anna University, Chennai; and L.
