Court allows Sasikalaa to recall witnesses

CHENNAI OCT. 31. Special court-I has allowed Sasikalaa to recall 45 prosecution witnesses in the "disproportionate wealth case" against Jayalalithaa for cross-examination.

The case has been adjourned to November 7.

In her petition filed under Section 311 Cr.PC, Ms.Sasikalaa, a close associate of Ms.Jayalithaa, sought recall of 59 prosecution witnesses for cross-examination.

In his order, R. Rajamanickam, special judge - I said it was evident on analysing the reasons given in the application, that if the petition was not allowed, a serious prejudice would be caused to the petitioner. Further, under the Cr.PC provision, it was mandatory to allow the application if the witnesses evidence appeared essential for arriving at a just decision of the case, the court said.

The case, registered by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, was that Ms. Jayalalithaa had accumulated wealth to the tune of Rs. 66.65 crores, "disproportionate to known sources of her income". Besides her, Ms. Sasikalaa and her relatives, V.N.Sudhagaran and Ilavarasi, have been cited as accused.
