Cotton mill workers stage demo for PF scheme

MADURAI : Members of the Madurai Urban District Cotton Mill Workers Association affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Union have urged the State Government to initiate immediate measures to implement the provident fund scheme for all mill workers.

Staging a demonstration under the leadership of R. S. Rajendiran, State general secretary here on Monday, the members wanted the Government to make sure that employers deposited the PF contribution on time.

The district unit president, Pon. Krishnan, and general secretary P. Muthuraja also participated.

Barbers rally

Members of the Tamil Nadu Barbers Association urged the Government to provide five per cent reservation to barbers in employment and education and take steps to include them in the Scheduled Tribes category.

Taking out a rally, led by N. M. Shanmugam, president, to highlight their demands here on Monday, the members called for the implementation of the recommendations of the Ambasankar Commission.

The Government should protect these minor caste groups under the provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, accord preference to them in the pursuit of medical courses, provide free house site pattas, allocate houses under group housing scheme and implement pension scheme, they said.
