Corporation schools lack basic amenities

CHENNAI OCT. 3. Over 450 teachers for primary and middle schools, 76 secondary grade teachers, 69 BT assistants and 58 post graduate teachers - a list of vacancies in the Chennai Corporation-run schools.

A status report prepared by the Tamil Primary School Improvement Campaign (TanPIC), an NGO networking several other organisations withing the city and as well as the state, puts into perspective the ailments of the schools run by the civic body. And the vacancy of teachers is just one of the many factors identified in 27 primary schools and 15 middle schools, where a survey was done in the last couple of months.

According to the convenor of the campaign V.Balakrishnan, six NGOs were involved in the survey. Queries ranging from the facilities available at the school, the boys-to-girls ratio and reasons for drop outs were made. The schools were spread across the ten zones of the Corporation.

It was found that some of the schools did not even have basic amenities like drinking water and toilet facilities. In some schools, there was an absolute lack of space to accommodate the student strength. For example, the Corporation Middle School at Kolathur worked on a dual shift basis to ensure that all the students could be accommodated.

A considerable improvement in attendance was noticed due to the mid-day meal scheme. A general complaint made by the teachers was that some parents enrolled their wards only to avail free uniforms.
