KUMBAKONAM: Gauge conversion between Kumbakonam and Mayiladuthurai is likely to be completed by January-end and train services may begin in February, Minister of State for Railways R. Velu said on Monday.

Mr. Velu, who inspected the Thiruvidaimaruthur and Aduthurai stations and the bridge across the Veeracholanar, told presspersons there was some delay in the work for want of pre-stressed concrete sleepers. "We have 6,000 concrete sleepers as against the requirement of 25,000. These are made at Thirumangalam and Gangaikondan. We expect to get them soon."

The gauge conversion between Thanjavur and Tiruvarur might be completed by March-end. In two months, the Coimbatore-Thanjavur Janasathapthi Express and the Mysore-Thanjavur Express would run up to Kumbakonam. He said the railways had planned a new bridge at Pamban. But as the cost would be high, it decided to modernise the existing bridge at a cost of Rs. 50 crores.
