Construction workers picket taluk offices

ERODE, MARCH 17. The Erode district police removed 475 construction workers belonging to AITUC when they picketed the taluk offices in Erode and Sathyamangalam.

They staged the stir demanding the State Government that pension be sanctioned to them besides housing facilities and accident relief fund. They were released in the evening.

Our Staff Reporter from Salem writes:

The construction workers along with their family members staged a road roko in front of the Collectorate here today demanding pension benefits and other assistance announced earlier by the State Government.

About 1,200 persons including a large number of women participated in the protest organised as part of the State-wide protest announced by the Construction Workers Association of the AITUC.

The workers urged the Government to make the welfare board created for the construction workers in 1994 operational. Traffic near the Collectorate was affected for about half-an-hour. The police personnel removed the agitators and released them after a while.
