Construction workers held for bid to block traffic

TIRUCHI, MARCH 17 . About 172 persons comprising members of the Construction Workers' Union, affiliated to the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), and their family members were arrested for attempting to block traffic at two centres — Chathiram Bus Stand in the city and Alampattipudur in Manikandam union — pressing their demands.

Among the arrested were 29 women and six children.

Their main demands included pension for construction workers above 60 years of age, free medical facilities, and accident insurance scheme. Pressing for immediate settlement of their grievances by the Construction Workers' Welfare Board, the protestors urged the Government to provide them proper housing facilities.

A total of 102 persons, including 17 women and six children, were taken into custody when they attempted to block traffic near the Chathiram Bus Stand in the city.

The State president of the AITUC, N. Periyasamy, led the protest. The district unit secretary of the Union, K. Suresh, and the district unit secretary of the AITUC, N. Balakrishnan, also participated in the agitation. All arrested persons were later released.

A similar protest was also held at Alampattipudur when 70 construction workers, including 12 women, were arrested. The agitation was led by the district vice-president of the union, Selvakumar, sources added.
