Consolidated scheme sought for free clothes distribution

Pondicherry NOV. 9 . The AIADMK MLA, A. Anbalagan, today said the Administration should ensure that dhotis and sarees were distributed to the poor and those identified as living below the poverty line through one consolidated scheme instead of many departments being involved.

Speaking to reporters, he said now the Departments of Social Welfare, Fisheries, Handicapped and the Adi Dravidar Welfare were implementing the scheme and the garments were not made available on time during a festival or monsoon to the targeted group. Confusion, delay and unplanned expenditure had been caused by haphazard operation of the scheme.

The MLA said the dhotis and sarees were not yet available despite the continuing rain. Normally the garments would be available prior to Deepavali.

Mr. Anbalagan said the expenditure for the scheme touched Rs. 8 crores. There were several `irregularities' marked by projection of excessive number of beneficiaries or delayed distribution of garments.
