Conflicts in South Asia undergo transformation

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Internal and external conflicts in South Asia, the most volatile region in the world, have been at various levels of metamorphosis. Some of them have experienced transformation, leading to their escalation or resolution.

This formed part of a theme statement of a national seminar on `Conflict transformation and peace building in South Asia," jointly organised by the Department of International Studies, Stella Maris College (SMC) and the Centre for Security Analysis (CSA) here on Friday.

According to the statement, several factors influenced the transformation process including the nature of conflict and its objectives and the role of State and non-State actors in its peaceful culmination or violent escalation.

The seminar was aimed at reviewing academic and policy perspectives of conflict and peace building in South Asia, analysing the matrices of conflicts and State intervention in South Asia and examining the issues and challenges of the South Asian State actors in conflict transformation and the role of international intervention.

Principal Annamma Philip said the college had spearheaded several innovative programmes and the present seminar was the fifth consecutive national seminar organised by the Department of International Studies.
