Collection of water tax arrears opposed

TAMBARAM: Councillors of the Pallavaram Municipality on Wednesday opposed a proposal to collect water tax arrears from residents since 2002.

They said it would be a severe burden and also an unfair action, considering there was insufficient water supply for the past three years.

Collection of all forms of arrears, amounting to Rs. 4 crore, was placed for discussion at the council meeting. The councillors objected, saying that a resolution was passed in 2002 to increase the monthly water charges from Rs. 25 to Rs. 50.

However, the State Government approved it only now.

V. Santhanam (BJP) said there were no objections to collecting the revised charges with immediate effect, but forcing the residents to pay arrears was unfair.

S. Narasimhan CPI (M) said the local body had not supplied adequate water.

Responding to the councillors, P. Dhan Singh, chairman, said of the total of Rs. 4 crore due to the municipality, only Rs. 1 crore had been collected.
