Coimbatore Dec. 4. Following a direction from the Central Zoo Authority, authorities of the Coimbatore Corporation Zoo have begun shifting four single animals to the Vandalur Zoological Park, near Chennai.

But the animals refused to get into the cages brought to transport them. Official sources said they might be moved by tomorrow.

The CZA gave the directive to ensure that the biological life of these animals was not curtailed for want of a pair.

The CZA acted on an objection raised by animal lovers and also activist and former Union Minister, Maneka Gandhi. Observing that isolation would harm adult and sub-adult animals, the CZA called for shifting the animals from the zoo at the VOC Park here to Vandalur until arrangements were made for having them in pairs in a larger area.

The Corporation Zoo, spread over 4.5 acres, proved insufficient for accommodating bigger animals. The zoo now has as many as 300 animals and birds belonging to 38 species.

However, officials said many species bred in captivity in the conducive habitat in the zoo, including pelicans, langurs, night herons, spotted deer and sambar, parakeets, lovebirds and a green snake as well. Of the 300 animals, only a lion, a tiger, a bear and a pig-tailed monkey are without a pair.

Though the tiger and the panther were said to be `solitary' animals, they should be kept only in a group or in pairs to ensure that their biological life was not curtailed, the CZA stated.

The Corporation Commissioner, D. Karthikeyan, told The Hindu that the Corporation would add more area of the VOC Park to the zoo.

After expansion, the Corporation would obtain the approval of the council to create a natural environment so that the animals now shifted could be brought back.
