CM lauds philanthropist

PONDICHERRY, DEC. 27 At a time when there was either encroachment of property or difficulty for the government in getting suitable site to provide infrastructural facility, the donation of Rs. 20 lakh worth building to the Department of Education to run the primary wing of the Middle school (Ecole Central De Modeliarpet) by the - 88 - year old philanthropist, Mr.R.Chakrapani Chettiar, was exemplary, laudable and the donor deserved to be taken as a role model by others, said the Chief Minister, Mr.N.Rangasamy, while gratefully receiving the legal document for the donation of the building from Mr.Chakrapani Chettiar here today.The building is situated at Modeliarpet near here. The Chief Minister and others presented shawls as token of their appreciation to the donor amidst thunderous applause.

The function was held in the Cabinet room in the Assembly premises. Officials of the Department of Education, office-bearers of the Pondicherry Kamban Kazhagam and the relatives of the donor were present.

The Tourism Minister, Mr.K.Lakshminarayanan, who felicitated the donor, referred to the prophetic words of the Tamil poet Subramania Bharathiar that of all social projects, providing education for the poor and also catering for the wellbeing of the poor would always be an eternally good work one could do.

Dr. M. A. S. Subramanian, MLA, praised Mr.Chettiar`s benevolence and large heartedness to donate the newly constructed building for the school. The Joint Director of Education Mr.Venou, the Deputy Director of Education, Mr.R.Subbiah, and a few others spoke felicitating the donor.

Mr.Chakrapani Chettiar said he had taken the firm decision to get the building ready for the school and was happy to see that his dream had now become a reality. He thanked all those who had stood by him in his benevolent gesture

(A press communication from the Department of Education said that the building now housing the Middle school at Modeliarpet itself was donated in 1931 by Arjuna Subbaraya Naicker.The primary school housed in the building donated by Mr.Chettiar would be called `R.Chakrapani Chettiar Primary wing`.)
