‘Climate change a greater threat to world’

Climate change is a global phenomenon, accelerated by human activity said Parris N.Glendening, Former Governor of Maryland and president, Smart Growth America's Leadership Institute, USA here on Monday.

Inaugurating the international conference on disaster mitigation and management towards sustainable development at the Periyar Maniammai University as part of the silver jubilee celebrations, Glendening said that climate change is a greater threat to the global community than terrorism. Many natural disasters happened in the world. Climate change have an impact on agriculture, water resources, sea level, and ecosystems. Emissions levels are high in developed countries than in developing countries. Developed countries should help developing countries to curtail emission rate. Mr. Glendening called for faster urbanisation in countries developing countries in order to reduce poverty levels .

Quoting Onno Ruhl, the World Bank Country director for India, Mr. Glendening said that urbanisation and economic growth are interlinked.

Mr. Glendening released the proceedings of the conference.

N. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor, PMU, presided.

Rajan Natarajan, Deputy Secretary of State, Policy and External Affairs, Maryland USA, and W. Selvamurthy, Distinguished Scientist, and former Chief Controller Research and Development, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), also spoke.
