CHENNAI, NOV. 29. Officials of the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board's community development wing staged an awareness campaign and rally at a tenement complex in Vyasarpadi, north Chennai, to sensitise the dwellers to a cleaner environment.

Despite some initial resistance to such programmes, the Board staff said most residents of places such as Sathyamurthi Nagar understood the need for cleaner surroundings.

The Board's community workers said clearance of solid waste was a problem in multi-storey tenements due to various factors, including low awareness of environmental issues. For the past few months, the Board was deploying tricycles to clear solid waste, which would then be deposited in places earmarked for easy clearance by Corporation trucks. Seeking local participation by residents, the Board staff today distributed pamphlets to households, involving women from self-help groups, volunteers and social work trainees.
