Calls for support to continue economic reforms

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has appealed to the people to extend their support for the effective continuance of economic reforms introduced by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

Distributing various welfare assistance to about 4,000 beneficiaries to commemorate the birthday of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi at a function organised by the District Congress Committee (East) here on Sunday, the Minister said that the UPA government alone had the willpower and confidence to introduce reforms. The UPA introduced Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, waived farm loans to the tune of Rs. 74,000 crore, distributed educational loans to the tune of Rs. 52,000 crore to 25 lakh students, enacted Right to Information Act and Right to Education Act. Further, the promotion quota bill for SC/ST had also been passed in Rajya Sabha.

The Minister also pointed out that the employment guarantee scheme, direct cash transfer, and food security bill had come as boon to people in the rural areas.

The president of District Congress Committee (East), C. Robert Bruce, said that Kanyakumari district was always the fortress of Congress party and it had been proved in past Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. He appealed for allocating Nagercoil Lok Sabha seat to Congress party in the 2014-elections. He urged the government to implement direct cash transfer scheme at the earliest in the State for the benefit of poor people.
