School joins hands with Canara Bank for venture

CHENNAI: The Children's Day celebrations at National Public School, Gopalapuram, on Wednesday was not just centred around entertainment but also included a constructive venture in the interests of the students.

The school joined hands with Canara Bank for the launch of the `Canchamp' savings account programme.

Launching the programme, Canara Bank's General Manager R. Prabha spoke about the scheme, which encouraged children upto 12 years to open bank savings accounts. Parents or guardians may open the account in the name of their children with a minimum balance of Rs.100. This account would provide an indirect passport to avail loans for higher education, Mr. Prabha said. The scheme would both inculcate the saving habit in children and also pave the way for a secure education in future, he added.

Several students, including twins S. Vibhish and S. Vishal, who were the first account holders from the school, were presented with passbooks and gifts comprising a savings box and a personal diary as part of the scheme.

About 250 students from National Public School have opened accounts under the scheme at the Gopalapuram branch of Canara Bank. Around 5,000 bank accounts have been opened in 63 branches across the city under the programme. School principal Nalini Ravindran, and Deputy General Manager of Canara Bank G.K. Bhat participated.
