Condemning the ‘preferential treatment’ being given to Chennai in the load-shedding duration, cadres of Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamaath staged demonstration at Melapalayam on Friday.

Addressing the protestors, party’s state administrative committee chairman M. Shamsul Luha Rahmani said the huge gap prevailing between electricity generation and demand in the State had forced the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation to enforce power cut for unprecedented durations across Tamil Nadu while this duration in Chennai was only 2 hours. Even as the metro city and its suburbs, housing only 10 per cent of the State’s population, was consuming one-third of the total power generated, other districts of Tamil Nadu were experiencing 18-hour power cut.

“If this preferential treatment being given to Chennai is withdrawn, duration of power cut being clamped in other districts can be reduced phenomenally. If the taxes payable to the State Government and electricity tariff by the citizens of Tamil Nadu are the same, then the duration of power cut being effected across the State should also be the same. If the ‘special status’ being accorded to Chennai, citing lame excuses to support this unjust load-shedding, is not withdrawn, the TNTJ will organise a massive protest across Tamil Nadu, especially in all parts of Tirunelveli district,” Mr. Luha warned. Party office-bearers Yousuf Ali, M.S. Suleiman, Roshan, K.A. Syed Ali and Ansari participated in the demonstration.
