Bus driver sentenced to 6-month jail term

TIRUCHI, MARCH 11. The Judicial Magistrate Court V here today convicted and sentenced a private bus driver to six months imprisonment in an accident case in which two persons were killed and 10 injured in 2002. The Magistrate, Alexander, imposed a fine of Rs.19,000 on the driver, Ravi.

A police release issued here today said a Chennai-bound private bus from Tuticorin collided head on with a Madurai-bound lorry from Tiruchi on the Tiruchi - Madurai national highway at Panjappur on January 11, 2002. The spare driver of the omni bus, Malarmannan (30), died on the spot while the lorry driver, Bhoominathan (47), died of his injuries at the Government Hospital here.

The Traffic Investigation Unit registered a case against the omni bus driver, Ravi, for negligence leading to the accident. Inspector S. Kannan, who is in charge of Traffic Investigation in the city, is the Investigation Officer in the case, the release added.
