Bullock cart operators and labourers, owing allegiance to the Tiruchi District Sand Bullock Cart Labourers’ Association, staged a demonstration in the city on Tuesday urging the Public Works Department to grant them permission to transport sand from the Cauvery and the Coleroon rivers in the Tiruchi region.

The protesters said the bullock cart operators and labourers had been rendered jobless for the past three months as the Public Works Department had denied permission for transporting sand in bullock carts from the sand mines on the rivers. Public Works Minister O. Pannerselvam in response to a query at the Assembly had said that there was no bar on transporting sand by bullock carts after obtaining due permission.

Permission not granted

However, the department officials in Tiruchi were not granting permission, the agitators alleged.

The association demanded permission for bullock carts to operate four trips from government quarries a day and urged the department not to block their operations which met the requirements of people.
