Broiler prices likely to remain high

COIMBATORE, AUG. 1. The farm-gate price of broiler has remained high for the past four months and is expected to continue. The Broiler Coordination Committee sources said the current price was Rs. 27 a kg and it averaged around Rs. 30 during past 4 months.

One of the reasons was that the weekly production remained at 40 lakh birds. However, farmers did not increase the production this year to control price fluctuations.

Sources said there were no plans to take ``culling'' of birds in the near future and farmers expected the prices to remain at Rs. 30 a kg or more. Demand usually picked up in August - September, sources said.

The main markets were Kerala and Tamil Nadu and the production cost was Rs. 27 a kg mainly due to high soya and maize prices, they said.
