Boy found dead

MADURAI, AUG.21. Siva (15) was found dead with multiple cut injuries at his residence at Usilampatti on Friday night.

According to sources, a hide-merchant, Natarajan, complained that the boy, who was sleeping on the first floor, had deep cut injuries on the back of his head.

Prisoners escape

Two remand prisoners, M. Benedict (28) and T. Rajan (28) today escaped from police custody here while they were being taken to the Palayamkottai central prison on Friday night.

According to the police, two escorts, Armed Reserve constables from Tirunelveli, Paramasivam and Premkumar, were fast asleep when the duo gave a slip while travelling by a State Express Transport Corporation bus. They were returning from Chennai, after being produced in two courts on August 19 and 20, the police said.

The police are investigating whether, the accused involved in several robbery, dacoity and murder cases, got down at the Mattuthavani bus stand or midway. The bus halted on the highway between Melur and the Ring Road for a couple of minutes owing to traffic jam.

The missing was noticed, when the bus reached the Mattuthavani bus stand at 1.30 a.m. The two accused, along with another accused, Gajendran, were seated in the rear portion of the bus.

The Melur police have registered a case.
