BJP criticises delay in distribution of sarees

Pondicherry Oct. 22. A.M. Krishnamoorthy, the BJP MLA, today criticised the Pondicherry Government for its "failure to distribute dhotis and sarees to the poor in time for Deepavali", and said he, along with party volunteers, would observe a 10-hour fast on Friday as a protest.

Mr. Krishnamoorthy told reporters here that normally the garments would be distributed well ahead of the festival. For couple of years now, the scheme had not been implemented properly and only when agitations were held did the Government come out of its `inertia'. He said he would lead a fast on Deepavali day at the Indira Gandhi statue at Ellaipillaichavady from 8 a.m. in the Reddiarpalayam constituency, which he represented.

Mr. Krishnamoorthy alleged that sports associations, which were not genuine or were virtually

non-existent, had been extended grants, and demanded an enquiry by an expert committee. Ineligible organisations should be weeded out from the list of beneficiaries.

Rise in theft cases

Instances of theft in residential colonies at Natesan Nagar, Mohan Nagar, Periar Nagar and Kamaraj Nagar were on the rise. Hence there should be police outposts at important localities.

He said the NDA Government at the Centre had sanctioned several important projects for Pondicherry and called upon the Congress government to evolve adequate plans to utilise the Centre's gesture.

Govt. assailed

The Deputy Secretary of the Pondicherry State CPI Committee, T. Geethanathan, also criticised the Government for the delay in distribution of dhotis and sarees to the poor.

The CPI (M) Secretary, T. Murugan, also assailed the Government for its inaction.
