BJP campaign against JIPMER autonomy

PONDICHERRY, MARCH 24. Activists of Bharatiya Janata Party State unit will launch a signature campaign to oppose the Centre's move to make the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) an autonomous institution.

The State unit president, R. Kesavalu, said here today at a press conference that the campaign would be launched near the bus terminal on March 29 under the leadership of S. Thirunavukkarasar, former Union Minister.

The BJP MLA, A. M. Krishnamurthy, and the party's medical wing convener, N. Dharmarajan, said that even under the direct control of the Health Ministry, several departments were bereft of doctors and facilities. Patients suffering head injuries were being referred to corporate hospitals in Chennai. Instead of addressing these issues the Ministry was trying to convert JIPMER into an autonomous body.

Mr. Kesavalu appealed to the Chief Minister to ensure that status quo was maintained.
