CHENNAI: The man who has penned 3,600 songs will turn 52 shortly. The Lions Club of Madras Seven Hills has arranged a grand birthday celebration on July 13 for poet Vairamuthu at the Kamaraj Memorial Hall in recognition of his contribution to Tamil literature and film lyrics.

On the agenda is a musical evening by Shruthi Layaa. "From my first song `Idhu Oru Ponmalai Pozhudhu' to the latest `Iyengaru Veetu Azhage', the orchestra will play nearly 35 songs and popular singers like S.P. Balasubramaniam will be singing the songs," says the poet.

His favourite

Asked to pick out his personal favourites, Vairamuthu chooses the lilting `Ilaya Nila' (Payanagal Mudivathilai), composed by Ilayaraaja, the sing-song `Ayiram Thamarai Mottukkale' (Alaigal Oivathilai), and the melodious `Chinna Chinna Asai' (Roja).

Also topping his list of favourites are the pulsating `Manitha Manitha', (Kann Sivanthal Mann Sivakum') and `Putham Puthu Bhoomi Vendum' (Thiruda Thiruda).

"Another best in my list is `Satham Illatha Ulagam Kettane', which has 89 lines, from the film Amarkalam. This is the longest song ever written in Indian cinema. All these will be played on my birthday," says Vairamuthu.

Of his future plans, he says: "Three of my books will be translated in English. A compilation of 1,000 songs will soon be published in the form of a book."

Club founder Rishi Tiwari said their club has done several social service activities. "We have done comprehensive health checkups for the employees of Chennai Corporation, police personnel of Adyar, staff of Raj Bhavan, Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue service department," he said.

They have also conducted bone density test camps, free pulse polio camps and blood donation camps. "We are going to celebrate Vairamuthu's birthday with songs, music and speeches by eminent people from the film fraternity," he said. Vairamuthu will honour poets Kasi Anandan and Ingulab with a cash award of Rs. 10,000, each, in recognition of their service to Tamil literature. Event Manager Ramana says: "Director Bharathiraja, actor Sivakumar, singer S.P. Balasubramaniam, music director Vidyasagar and lion district governor Dr. Natarajan will felicitate the poet".
