Bench signal for idol immersion

MADURAI, OCT. 7. Little short of three weeks since the Vinayagar Chathurthi celebrations were over, an idol of Lord Vinayaka waiting for immersion, at last received the green signal from the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today.

The Bench directed that the procession at Weavers Colony in Aruppukottai might be taken out as per the route laid down by the DSP for the Aruppukottai sub-division. In his writ petition, the priest of the idol, V.M.P.A. Ananthan, said though the district secretary of the Hindu Munnani had proposed to take out the procession on a particular route, the police refused to grant permission and directed them to take another route. The route suggested by the DSP ran through a Muslim locality, the petitioner alleged there would be a law and order problem if the procession was allowed on the route.
